Spring, the season of new life, fresh starts and heaps of inspiration. It also means there’s a shed load of new trends and key pieces floating around in the shops. I was lucky enough to attend the Topshop Norwich Fashion Show (link) last week and it’s really motivated me to switch up my style a little bit. This Spring I’m planning on add a few key pieces into my wardrobe to freshen it up. Inspired by the show I’m sharing five key SS17 trends that could subtly slide into most wardrobes.
Denim never really goes out of fashion, it just gets re-worked into different style. For Spring and Summer at Topshop it’s all about lighter, slightly distressed denim. Go the whole hog and rock the top to toe look or sneak it in with classic items to give you outfit a casual twist. Even better customise your denim to you. Sew on patches, pin on badges or go a little mad with a pair of scissors. Naturally as the warmer weather rolls around short shorts are back, but thank god the bum flashing shorts are out this season!
Whilst you’ll never see me wandering around a matching track suit, I can get on board with the whole sports luxe trend. For me it’s all about the subtle detailing, such a baseball cap, a hoodie with jeans or a sports style jacket. Naturally the focus was on Ivy Park at Topshop, alongside their range of pretty trainers and erm fluffy sliders…something you won’t see me wearing! Hobbits and hairy toes spring to mind, but if you are cool enough to pull it of – go ahead!
A plain white shirt never goes out of style, but the traditional style shirt certainly is not for everybody. It makes me feel like I’m going to school or dressing up for an interview! Thankfully this Spring, they’ve got a little more interesting. Think Victoriana style shirts, frills, embroidery (which is basically everywhere) and bell sleeves. It just add an extra bit of interest, texture or dimension to an outfit and I love it!
Whether it’s political, subtle or making a statement, slogan jumpers and t-shirts are everywhere. My favourite look from the Topshop Norwich Fashion Show has to be the one below. Firstly I love the statement and secondly I love how the top is paired with a fierce and kinda sexy skirt and shoe combo. It adds a slightly girl and more flattering dimension to the tee. I need that whole look in my life! So add a casual slogan tee to a smart outfit or go slouchy and sport luxe esq for a more off duty look.
Having one bold item in a look was another huge trend and it’s something I can get on board with! Whether it’s adding colour subtly with a pair of shoes, or playing down a bold outfit with neutral or monochromatic item, it’s so easy to do. It’s also a lovely way of slowly introducing colour into your wardrobe if you’re terrified of colour like me!
So there we have the five simple and subtle trends from the Topshop Norwich Fashion Show last week. They are the kind of pieces that should already go with everything and they can be repurposed and re-styled for the rest of the year and even next year too! Now that’s what I call smart ‘tred-led’ shopping. So go on…get browsing!
