On Saturday I turn 25 years old, as a child I thought that 25 was the pinnacle of adulthood. By now I’d have my perfect job, I’d own a house, be married with kids and be earning a lot of money. As I’m about to turn 25 I have no interested in marriage or children, but I do have an interest in saving for a house and I happen to love my job. I can now look back and laugh at my younger self. As I type this I’m not at all bothered about turning a quarter of a century, I am looking forward to be able to hire a car with ease though (I’m so fun!) Instead I thought I would look back and share a pearl of wisdom or two, so here’s 25 things I’ve learnt in 25 years on planet earth.
– Your life will never be as you imagined it when you were younger. And you know what that’s perfectly ok!
– Fairytales are bullshit. Don’t sit around and wait for something to happen. Go and make it happen. Afterall, Prince Charming won’t come and sweep you off of your feet if you’re hiding in your castle all day long.
– People come in and out of your life for various reasons. Nobody stays in your life forever, you’ll have plenty of friendships but only a handful will last a long time.
– Your time is precious, work out who or what to invest it in.
– It’s ok to not fit in, wear the cool clothes or have the popular hobbies. Human’s aren’t designed to be cookie cutter representations of whatever you think ‘the norm’ is. In fact being different or unique is cool in itself.
– Those cool kids at high school won’t be cool in a good few years. It’s the freaks and weirdo’s that will be doing the amazing things.
– We should celebrate humans because they are wonderful and unique creatures. You can learn so much from so many different people. So take the time to listen to their stories and what they have to say. You’ll be surprised at how much you discover.
– Shit happens, you’ll eventually learn to get on with it.
– Life is about balance – you need bad times to appreciate the good.
– Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass it’s about learning to dance in the rain.
– It’s ok to not be ok and there’s absolutely no shame in admitting it. If anyone tells you otherwise, they’re wrong and you probably don’t need that sort of person in your life.
– It’s ok to ask for help. It doesn’t make you weak or any less of a person. In fact it takes so much strength to admit it and it’s so worth it. Trust me.
– Everything is temporary, even life itself. This too shall pass.
– It’s the bad times that give you the strength you need to carry on.
– It’s ok to admit you were wrong about things. Life’s one big lesson after all.
– Don’t be a dick, give out the vibes you want to receive back. Being a jackass won’t get you anywhere. Take note Mister Trump.
– Be the change you want to see in the world. This was our sixth form motto and I’d spend ages rolling my eyes at how stupid it was. I was wrong, it really couldn’t be more relevant right now either.
– Believe in something more than yourself. Whether it be god, the universe, karma or other people, it’s not you against the world.
– If there’s something you’re passionate about, go ahead and do it, talk about it, but don’t force it on other people.
– Say yes, a little spontaneity can be good once in a while!
- Likewise, don’t be afraid to say no. People will respect you for it, if they don’t you don’t need them.
- Your body is the only one you’ll ever have to treat it with respect, learn to love it and make it the best it can be.
- Learn to enjoy spending time on your own, it’s rather incredible. After all if you don’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?
- You can do anything that you set your mind to. It may not be easy and you may end up achieving it a completely different way than you though, but you’ll get there. So never stop dreaming.
– You never stop learning. Life is one big lesson packed full of incredible adventures, so go ahead, make the most of it and soak it all up.
So there we go; 25 Things I’ve Learnt in 25 Years. There are probably so many more that I could come up with, if I’m honest I could ramble on about this shit all day long! I love reading and hearing peoples pearls of wisdom. I’m one of those people who will quite happily let others talk to me for hours. By the way none of this is meant in a preachy ‘I know everything’ kind of way, because I don’t, nobody does.
What had you learnt after 25 years on the planet?
