5 ways to beat the holiday blues

There’s nothing like the feeling of a good holiday – the warmth of the sun on your skin, the salt in your hair and the relaxed pace of life. It’s over before you know it and you’re getting off of that plane being hit with a blast of cold British rain. Then there’s the going back to work with the hundreds of unread emails and a mile long to do list. It’s easy to see why the holiday blues can kick in. Since coming back from Boa Vista, I’ve been struggling a little bit so I thought I would share 5 ways to beat the holiday blues. They are just simple little things I’ve been doing to make myself feel better.

Don’t put loads of pressure on yourself to snap back into regular life.  Accept that you’ll feel down for a while and even embrace the holiday blues for a day or two. Hide under a pile of blankets and put on your favourite movie to cheer yourself up. Take a long hot bath and catch up on sleep. The washing and tidying can wait a day or two! After a short wallow you should start to feel a little brighter. 


Recount your adventures to your friends, type a blog post or two or go or get your favourite snaps printed. Now you’ll have something positive to look at that will remind you of the fun you had, in the context of your everyday life. Travel, events and adventures all enrich your life in some way or another, so put the things that you learnt or discovered to good use!


According to my Instagram comments, the best way to get over the holiday blues is to book another! Or at least make plans for another one. If you’re able to do that, great! If not grab your diary and arrange fun things to do in the near future. It could be a girls night in, a meal with some friends or a day out close to home. It will give you something to plan and look forward to.

I’m really looking forward to seeing Rambert at Norwich Theatre Royal, having drinks with friends, my facial at U & Your Skin and two very exciting events. These had been in my diary before I went away, but grumpy Shelley had completely ignored them. Instead I forced myself to look forward to them and get excited!


Scent can instantly change or boost your mood so go and burn your favourite candle or purchase a reed diffuser in a happy scent. I adore The Berrys & Grey Prosecco & Berries signature candle as well as their vanilla and white ginger scent.  For beauty products I’m loving anything in NEOM’s a Scent to make you happy, because it does just that. when ever I’m feeling down I’ll use their shower and bath oil in the morning or sprite myself with their on the go mist. It honestly works wonders.


I don’t know about you but I always spend more time outside on holiday than I do normally. So get outside for a bit of a vitamin D boost. Head for nature if you fancy a de-stress too, it’s amazing the difference a view can have on your mood. If you’re local to Norwich Mousehold Heath in the Autumn is stunning, Foxley Woods is breathtaking in the Spring and the Winterton-on-Sea is perfect in the summer. In the winter I adore wrapping up warm and heading to the coast, you might even be able to spot a seal of two!

It’s a couple of weeks on from my holiday now and I’m well and truly back into the swing of things! It feels like a fond, distant memory and I’m looking forward to the exciting things I have coming up. Let me know if you try any of these 5 ways to beat the holiday blues!
